How to Opt Out of Microsoft Copilot Model Training (Microsoft)

If you sign in with a personal Microsoft account, your chats and voice conversations can be used to help train future models. This 2026 guide walks through the current opt-out flow across every surface where Copilot runs.
Why this matters. Consumer AI products use chats, posts, and account data to train models by default. Once your information is included in a training run, it cannot be removed retroactively. Why opt out of Microsoft Copilot?
Copilot's default settings send your text and voice conversations into Microsoft's model-improvement pipeline. That can include questions you ask, files you paste, and audio you speak into Copilot Voice. If a chat contains a client name, a medical detail, a home address, or an internal document, that content becomes part of the training corpus unless you turn the setting off. Opting out keeps future conversations out of training runs and reduces the surface area for accidental exposure.

How to opt out of Microsoft Copilot
Open Copilot on the web. Go to copilot.com and sign in with your personal Microsoft account.
Open your profile. Click your profile icon in the top right, then click your profile name.
Go to Privacy. Select Privacy from the menu.
Turn off training on text. Toggle off Training on conversation activity.
Turn off training on voice. Toggle off Training on voice conversations.
Repeat inside the desktop app. In the Windows or macOS Copilot app, click your profile icon → Settings → Privacy, then turn off the same two toggles.
Repeat inside the mobile app. In the iOS or Android app, open the menu → profile icon → Account → Privacy, then turn off the same toggles.

Your setting change takes effect on new conversations right away and syncs across the web, desktop, and mobile within about 30 days. Conversations already used in a completed training run stay in that model — Microsoft cannot pull them back out. Personalization (Copilot remembering your preferences across chats) is a separate control, so you can turn off training and keep personalization, or turn off both.
Frequently asked questions
Does this apply to Copilot inside Microsoft 365?
No. If you use Copilot through a work or school Entra ID account, or through a Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription, your chats are already excluded from training by default. This guide covers the free consumer Copilot on personal Microsoft accounts.
What about Copilot Voice?
Voice conversations are covered by the separate Training on voice conversations toggle. Turn off both toggles to cover text and audio.
Are old conversations deleted when I opt out?
No. Opting out prevents future conversations from being used for training. To remove past chats from your account, delete them from your Copilot history; that removes them from your account but not from any model already trained on them.
Does opting out change how Copilot works for me?
No. You still get the same responses, tools, and features. The setting only controls whether your inputs are used to improve future models.
I live outside the US — do I need to opt out?
If you are in Brazil, mainland China (Hong Kong excluded), Israel, Nigeria, South Korea, or Vietnam, Microsoft already excludes your conversations from training. Everywhere else, the toggles above are the opt-out.
