How to Opt Out of ChatGPT Model Training (OpenAI)

Opt out of AI services use of your personal information for future training data.

When you chat with ChatGPT, OpenAI may use your conversations to improve its AI models. This is on by default for Free, Plus, and Pro personal accounts. The good news: you can turn it off in a few steps. This 2026 guide walks you through exactly how, what it covers, and what it does not fix.

Why this matters. Consumer AI products use chats, posts, and account data to train models by default. Once your information is included in a training run, it cannot be removed retroactively. The earlier you opt out, the more of your data stays out. Priwall by mePrism tracks every major AI opt-out so you can act before, not after.

Why opt out of ChatGPT model training?

Consumer ChatGPT conversations are used by default to train OpenAI's future models. Anything you type — including details about your health, finances, work plans, or personal life — could be embedded in training data even if it is never shown to another user. Opting out stops new conversations from being used for training going forward. It does not delete past conversations or remove data already used in completed training runs, so the sooner you turn it off, the more of your data stays out.

What to expect after opting out

The change takes effect immediately — any new conversation you start is excluded from OpenAI's training data going forward. Existing conversations stay in your chat history but are not retroactively pulled out of training data that has already been used. If you ever switch the setting back on, future conversations resume being eligible for training. Temporary Chat mode is a separate option: those sessions are deleted after 30 days and are never used to train models, even if the main toggle is on.

Frequently asked questions

Does turning off training delete my chat history?

No. Your conversations stay in your account. The setting only controls whether new conversations are used to train OpenAI's models.

Does this apply to ChatGPT Business or Enterprise?

No. Business, Enterprise, and Education accounts are not used to train models by default, so this toggle does not apply.

Can OpenAI remove my data from past training runs?

No. The opt-out is forward-looking. Data already used in completed training runs cannot be retroactively removed.

What is Temporary Chat mode?

Temporary Chat is a separate mode where conversations are deleted after 30 days and are never used to train models. Use it for sensitive prompts even if your main training toggle is on.

Does this affect ChatGPT mobile and desktop equally?

Yes. Once toggled off, the setting applies across web and mobile when you are signed into the same OpenAI account.
