How to Opt Out of Grok AI Data Collection on X (Twitter)

Opt out of AI services use of your personal information for future training data.

Grok is xAI's AI assistant built into the X (formerly Twitter) platform. By default, your X account data and activity may be used as part of Grok's data practices. You can limit this through X's privacy settings, though the opt-out applies to future use and does not remove data already collected. This 2026 guide walks through each step and the realistic limits.

Why this matters. Consumer AI products use chats, posts, and account data to train models by default. Once your information is included in a training run, it cannot be removed retroactively. The earlier you opt out, the more of your data stays out. Priwall by mePrism tracks every major AI opt-out so you can act before, not after.

Why opt out of Grok and xAI data collection?

Grok may collect your X account information, content you post and interact with, your prompts and inputs when using Grok, Grok's outputs and your feedback, and your conversation history. Public posts on X can also feed Grok training without any additional action on your part. Your views, writing style, and questions can therefore shape how Grok responds to other users. The opt-out applies going forward — it does not remove already-collected data — so the sooner you toggle it off, the more of your activity stays out of future training. Use Private Chat for sensitive sessions and the xAI Privacy Portal to exercise data rights.

What to expect after opting out

Once toggled off, your data is no longer shared with Grok and third-party collaborators going forward. Data already collected or shared is not automatically deleted; use the xAI Privacy Portal to submit formal access or deletion requests. Public posts already on X remain on the platform — the toggle controls Grok-specific data sharing, not your overall X visibility. Private Chat sessions are not saved to your history and are deleted within about 30 days, subject to legal, safety, or compliance retention.

Frequently asked questions

Does opting out remove my X public posts from Grok training?

Not retroactively. The setting controls future data sharing. Submit deletion requests via the xAI Privacy Portal for past data.

Are Private Chat conversations always deleted?

Conversations in Private Chat mode aren't saved to history and are deleted within about 30 days, except where legal, safety, or compliance reasons require longer retention.

Where do I make formal data rights requests?

Use the xAI Privacy Portal at x.ai/privacy-portal to submit access, deletion, or portability requests.

Does the toggle stop Grok from working?

No. Grok continues to function. The toggle limits how your data is shared for training and improvement.

Is the setting in the same place on web and mobile?

Both routes go through Privacy and safety, but the menu paths differ slightly. The guide covers both.
