How to Opt Out of Ancestry (2026 Step-by-Step)

Ancestry holds two categories of your personal data: family tree information and, if you took an AncestryDNA test, your genetic data. This 2026 guide covers how to close your account, request DNA destruction, and delete your stored results.

The reality of data brokers. Removing yourself from a single broker isn't enough. The FTC and EPIC have documented that personal data resurfaces on people-search sites within 30–90 days because brokers re-source from each other. Priwall by mePrism monitors hundreds of brokers and re-removes you automatically.

Why opt out of Ancestry?

Ancestry holds one of the largest genealogical and genetic databases in the world, and three serious privacy risks follow from that. First, your DNA data can reveal health predispositions and family relationships that you may not want stored by a corporation — or exposed in a breach. Second, family trees link you to living relatives who never consented. Third, Ancestry shares de-identified data with research partners, and technical re-identification remains possible. Closing your account and requesting DNA destruction is the most thorough way to address these risks.

How to opt out of Ancestry

  1. Log in to your Ancestry account. Go to ancestry.com and sign in to the account you want to close.
  2. Delete your DNA results. In your DNA account settings, find the option to delete your DNA results and confirm. This removes your genetic data from Ancestry's database.
  3. Request destruction of your DNA sample. In DNA Settings, find the option to revoke consent to store your physical sample. Ancestry will then destroy it within up to six weeks.
  4. Remove your family tree. Go to your Trees section, open each tree, and delete it using the tree settings.
  5. Close your account. Go to Account Settings and select the option to close your account. Ancestry will deactivate it and begin deleting your personal data.
  6. Confirm via email and follow up. Ancestry sends a confirmation when your account closure is processed. Save this email; if you do not receive it within a few days, contact Ancestry support to confirm.

Frequently asked questions

Does deleting my Ancestry account also delete my DNA?

Not automatically. You must separately request deletion of your DNA results and revoke consent to store your physical sample. Ancestry treats these as distinct actions in account settings.

Can Ancestry share my DNA data with law enforcement?

Ancestry states they will not share DNA data without a valid court order. Deleting your data removes this risk entirely.

What happens to my DNA matches after I delete my data?

Once you delete your DNA results and close your account, your profile will no longer appear in other users' match lists. Existing matches will see your profile removed.

How long does Ancestry take to destroy my DNA sample?

Physical DNA sample destruction can take up to six weeks after you revoke consent. Digital results are deleted faster, typically within a few days.

Can I download my DNA data before deleting it?

Yes. Go to DNA Settings and download your raw data file before deleting. Save a copy if you want to use it with another genealogy service.
